“Sometimes I think I’m crazy for doing this,” Ben Townend said earlier this week, as he was putting the finishing touches on the ensemble that would transform him from a 6-foot-4-inch North Park machinist to a 7-foot-1-inch “Star Wars” Wookiee. But for the people who spend countless hours creating everyone else’s photo opportunities, dressing up for Comic-Con is about more than throwing on a silly cape and calling it a day. For reasons that would soon become clear, Colleen Townend thought her husband, Ben, needed help getting from their room at the Marriott Marquis to the Comic-Con exhibit floor Friday. For Comic-Con goers, the parade of costumed characters roaming the Convention Center halls is both a gift and a given. “He’s dressed as Chewbacca,” she said. It’s a calling. So she called the front desk for a security escort. It isn’t just a costume. “And I don’t think I’m the only one. Zombies in varying degrees of decay and many Hot Princesses in a rainbow array of garter belts.
